Rites Controversy (1630-1742) | Pray for unity among Christians.
Opium Wars (1839-64) | Pray that Chinese dissociate Christianity from
foreign imperialism.Taiping Rebellion (1850-64) | Pray against cults. Pray that the government would see true Christians as loyal citizens. Pray that Western Christians working in China be able to separate the Gospel from their own cultural preferences, and from the political aims of their own countries of origin.
Japanese Invasion, especially the Najing Massacre (1937-38) | Pray for a spirit of forgiveness, which is not a cultural value.
Establishment of the People’s Republic of China
On October 1, 1949, Communists established the People's Republic of China, which resulted in government-enforced hostility to Christianity; churches were closed, pastors imprisoned, and missionaries expelled.
However, through Mao’s reforms, Mao unintentionally created the perfect environment for Christian revival — Mao united the country, simplified Chinese script, greatly increased the literacy rate so more could read the Bible, and eliminated a lot of Chinese traditions that were barriers to Christianity, trying to replace them with his brand of Communism, which proved a failure.
By removing Christian missionaries, Mao removed the perception of Christianity being a foreign religion, allowing Christianity to become indigenous. All of these factors combined created a spiritual vacuum which eliminated some of the greatest barriers to the spreading of the gospel and paved the way for one of the greatest spiritual revivals in history. Pray that God will continue to pave the way for the gospel to spread across China!
Korean War (1950–53) | Pray that God would end the hostility of Chinese toward Americans and South Koreans, especially Christians. It is widely taught in Chinese schools that the South Koreans and Americans started the Korean War.
Cultural Revolution (1966-76) | Pray that the disillusioned generation of the Red Guards who are now adults would overcome their distrust of believing in anything and open their hearts to eternal life.
Deng Xiaoping (1904-1997) | President Deng Xiaoping solidified his power by 1981, re-establishing the free-flow of commerce and transit in China, as well as greater tolerance for Christianity, including the Three-Self Churches. Pray that Deng's example of pragmatic tolerance for Christianity would continue and expand until there is complete freedom for Christian ministry.
July 1, 1997 | Hong Kong reverted to China as a special administrative region with the promise of one country, two systems. Pray for religious freedom and growing revival in Hong Kong.
February 2018 | New religious regulations were enacted in China that greatly limited Christian activities and signaled a new wave of persecution. Pray for God to reverse these regulations, strengthen the church in China, convince society of the blessings of a Biblical worldview and, eventually, end persecution.
Hong Kong Protests | Pray for wisdom and perseverance for God’s people in Hong Kong as a new security law passed in the summer of 2020 grants powerful jurisdiction to China.
Xi Jinping (b. 1953) | Xi Jinping has greatly reversed the tolerance for Christianity and intensified persecution considerably, and increased government control as a whole. Pray for the policies of greater tolerance for Christianity would return and develop into God’s plan for significant religious freedom for Christians.
Coronavirus | Pray for those in China looking for truth and permanency in the aftermath of the coronavirus to hear and receive the hope of the Giver of eternal life through Jesus Christ.
Pray that political leaders of China (I Timothy 2) would be moved to believe and advance the gospel. Pray that Sauls would be turned into Pauls.
Geographical
China is a very mountainous country which creates many barriers to transportation, including the propagation of the gospel.
Pray for unreached peoples in remote mountains and deserts to be reached with the gospel; only 25% of the land in China is arable; the rest are desert and mountains.
China is bordered by fourteen countries. Pray for the Chinese to take the gospel to all the surrounding nations and beyond.
